- AIDS has killed more than 25 million people between 1981 and 2007, making it one of the most destructive epidemics in recorded history.

- Worlds AIDS day idea was first thought up in August of 1987 by James W. Bunn and Thomas Netter, who were public information officers for the Global Programme on AIDS at the World Health Organization. And later is was decided to be celebrated on December 1st, 1988 and every year after.

- The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS was founded in 1996, and took over the planning for World AIDS Day. Where they started a World AIDS Campaign in 1997 to focus on year-round communications, prevention and educations.

Today AIDS awareness is celebrated all over the world through different events such as the World AIDS Campaign run by UNAIDS, and World AIDS Day.
